S3 turning 20, and really AWS as a whole turning 20, does make me feel pretty old. But it also made my job a lot more fun. Getting out of the datacenter, done with racking and stacking equipment, and just focusing on making the tech work for me and the code I was writing was a huge enabler. Once I bought into the cloud I was all in.
Initially I was skeptical. The costs didn’t make sense and the initial services were so limited. But once we got EC2 and VPCs it all clicked for me, and I’ve spent 20 years helping companies move their workloads to the cloud.

After years of hacks to ensure my S3 bucket names didn’t collide with some stranger’s bucket halfway around the world, AWS has . Now I can stop appending random strings, timestamps, regions just to get a unique name. Progress! Now I only have to fight everyone in the same region.
